VolkerWessels UK have successfully trialled the use of hybrid tower lights (VB9 Eco) and compared these to diesel generator lights (VT1). Moving from the use of VT1 or equivalents to a hybrid tower light will deliver significant savings across the UK business and reduce the CO2 produced by our construction operations. The plant hire desk have now mandated the use of hybrid tower lights. In the future only hybrid tower lights will be used on our sites.

To reduce the levels of emissions and green house gases, electric vehicles are seen by many as the answer to this problem, and sales of EVs and Hybrids have grown significantly over the last 10 years. Amey's company car list now includes a number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Expected benefits include long-term fuel-cost savings, better understanding of the climate change impact and taking heed of the positive impact on environmental health issues.

Specification and procurement changes are essential if we as a country are going to meet our sustainable development goals. It is possible to procure not just on price and there are many excellent examples where quality has a higher score. It is imperative to recognise the importance of Carbon intensity of products and their delivery. This many believe should be a serious part of the specification and then procurement of goods and services,” says Paul Aldridge, Sustainability Director at WJ Group.
